All about temporary protection in Germany for Ukrainians
Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Germany has remained one of the key EU countries where Ukrainians can legally reside, receive social support, use medical services, send their children to school, and work. That is why the topic of temporary protection in Germany for Ukrainians remains relevant not only for those who have just arrived, but also for those who already live in the country, are renewing their documents, are planning to find employment, or want to understand how to switch to another basis for residence in the future. At the same time, there is still a lot of confusion around §24 AufenthG. People often confuse temporary protection, classic asylum, visa-free short-term entry and regular long-term visas. This leads to outdated or inaccurate advice: some call §24 "refugee status", some believe that the permit is automatically extended without any action in any situation, and some expect this status to provide a full set of rights without any conditions. In fact, the mechanism works clearly, but only if you rely on official sources, and not on reports from forums or social networks. Updated: as of 04/22/2026. The material was prepared using official sources from Germany and the EU, in particular Germany4Ukraine , Germany4Ukraine: Social benefits , Germany4Ukraine: Medical treatment , Germany4Ukraine: Work in Germany , Council of the EU and the official notification on the extension of protection until 2027. Before submitting documents or traveling to Germany, it is worth checking the local instructions of your Ausländerbehörde again, as the technical procedure for registration, issuing cards and individual certificates varies depending on the city or federal state.

TOP 5 German cities worth visiting for Christmas holidays
Updated on 08/28/2026. Added confirmed dates for Christmas markets in Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Berlin and Dortmund for the 2026 season. Clarified the history of German fairs, the holiday schedule for December 24-26, the features of visiting each city and practical recommendations for transport, accommodation, payment and winter luggage. Christmas in Germany transforms cities into festive spaces with illuminations, wooden gnomes, and the aroma of mulled wine, roasted almonds, and gingerbread. The Christmas season begins long before the holiday itself: most markets open in the second half of November and run throughout Advent. In 2026, the first Sunday of Advent falls on November 29, although some large city markets start earlier. How is Christmas celebrated in Germany? The main family evening is December 24 – Heiligabend, or Christmas Eve. Families decorate the Christmas tree, gather for dinner and exchange gifts, and December 25 and 26 are official holidays in all federal states. On these days, most shops are closed, public transport may operate on a holiday schedule, and it is better to book a table in a restaurant in advance. It is important for tourists to distinguish between the Christmas market period and the holidays themselves. If the main purpose of the trip is to visit traditional markets, see concert programs and buy souvenirs, it is better to plan a trip for the end of November or the first three weeks of December. After December 23-24, many classic markets stop working, although in Berlin, Dortmund and some other cities, individual winter locations remain open until the end of the year.
