Crossing the Border into Austria

When traveling to Austria, it is important to be familiar with the entry rules and customs requirements and to have all necessary documents ready.

Visa-Free Travel to Austria

Length of stay: up to 90 days within any 180-day period without a visa. Entry document: a biometric international passport issued to a citizen of Ukraine. The passport must be valid for the entire duration of the stay.

Documents that may be checked at the Austrian border

Biometric international passport (required).

Proof of the purpose of the trip: hotel reservation, invitation from relatives/friends, return tickets.

Proof of financial means—cash, bank card, traveler’s checks. (Specific amounts are not always officially specified, so it is recommended to have a reserve.)

Customs Control and Import of Goods into Austria

When crossing the Austrian (or Schengen) border, your documents and luggage may be inspected. Duty-free allowances (for entry from Ukraine or other non-EU countries):

Alcohol: For example, when importing into the EU from non-member countries, the general limits apply—4 liters of wine and 16 liters of beer, or 1 liter of spirits with an alcohol content exceeding 22% by volume.

Tobacco: 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars or 250 g of tobacco—in accordance with the rules for importation into the EU from third countries.

Other goods: with a total value exempt from customs duties—current information is subject to change, so it is recommended to check before traveling.

Prohibited or restricted imports:

Weapons, fireworks, and certain types of knives.

Products of animal origin (meat, dairy products) without special permission—EU rules for imports from third countries.

Medications containing narcotic substances without a prescription. (Specific Austrian and EU regulations should be checked separately.)

Traveling with Children to Austria

Each child must have their own passport. If a child is traveling with only one parent or with other individuals, it is recommended to have a notarized consent form from the other parent or both parents (specifying the destination country and the duration of the trip).

Bringing Animals into Austria

An international veterinary passport (or equivalent document) is required, along with a microchip and a rabies vaccination. The animal must be clinically healthy and have the appropriate documentation. It is recommended to familiarize yourself in advance with the rules for bringing pets into Austria—specifically, the EU regulations.

Tips for Bus Passengers

Keep your documents and valuables with you, not in the luggage compartment. Be prepared for possible inspections not only at the Austrian border but also when transiting through other countries. Make sure your luggage does not contain any prohibited items.

Updated on August 28, 2026. Recommendations regarding documents, carry-on luggage, luggage safety, meals, and preparing for long trips have been added. Information has been added about the rights of bus passengers in the EU, preventing problems associated with prolonged sitting, booking tickets offline, and what to do if your luggage is lost. Traveling by bus is an affordable and convenient way to reach your destination. During the trip, you can enjoy the scenery, relax, and avoid spending time driving. At the same time, bus routes have certain characteristics that should be taken into account before departure. Staying in one position for a long time, limited space to move around, temperature fluctuations inside the bus, irregular stops, and limited access to the luggage compartment can affect a passenger’s well-being. The availability of restrooms, power outlets, Wi-Fi, and other amenities depends on the bus and the specific carrier’s policies, so you should check this information when booking. If you prepare your documents in advance, pack your belongings wisely between your checked luggage and carry-on, plan your meals, and bring the necessary items for comfort, even a long trip will be much easier. Below is a practical checklist of items for a bus trip lasting one or more days.
